We are thrilled to announce a new job opening for Zeega’s Director of Projects + Community Partnerships. Zeega, a winner of the 2011 Knight News Challenge, is an open source platform for creating interactive documentaries and inventing new forms of storytelling. You would join a core team of futurists in the fields of journalism, documentary arts, interactive design and social entrepreneurship.
Zeega is being developed at the metaLAB (at) Harvard, a new experimental research, design and development group for innovation in the arts, media and humanities at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society. Zeega is housed within the independent 501(c)3 non-profit Media And Place (MAP) Productions, the ultimate employer for this position.
The day-to-day activities of the Director of Projects + Community Partnerships include:
* Working collaboratively with journalists, news organizations, artists, community groups, filmmakers, librarians, scholars and others by editing and expanding their ideas to create engaging, participatory projects and interactive documentaries.
* Inventing new forms of DIY storytelling that creatively combine text messaging, interactive audio, tablet browsing, awesome maps, online data feeds, physical objects, networked receipt printers, portable projectors, print media and tons of things we haven’t even begun to consider.
* Working as a project manager to help people collaborate with designers and to serve as a liaison to Zeega’s core creative technology team.
* Creating wireframes, project plans, grant proposals and budgets.
* Thinking about user interface design as a narrative process. We want Zeega to create immersive experiences and believe storytelling is an essential part of Zeega’s development.
* Quickly responding to emails, not over or under communicating, running efficient, organized meetings with partners and Zeega project teams.
* Communicating with Zeega’s international community via Twitter, Facebook, Zeega’s happenings blog, public events and other venues.
The ideal candidate has:
* Demonstrated experience in documentary/journalism, preferably across multiple platforms: specifically, we’re looking for people who can hear story ideas and imagine multiple, engaging ways they can be told
* A passion for storytelling, editing and design
* Is exceptionally organized and a great communicator in all contexts: from large, public meetings and presentations; to Twitter; to quick, clear responses on email. (If you like to take a day or two to call people back or respond, this may not be your ideal job.)
* Enjoys frequently traveling, working non-traditional hours, meeting excited (and sometimes tech-phobic) partners, and helping them realize their projects
* Has experience managing interactive projects from conception to design to implementation.
You don’t have to know how to code, but you do need to know (or be able to quickly learn) the differences between JavaScript and PHP, html and css, etc. And you should be familiar with Adobe Creative Suite for wireframing and prototype design.
You don’t have to live in Boston right now, but if hired, the position is based at our new design studio in the middle of Cambridge, MA (sorry, no telecommuting). The position includes benefits, and in addition to working on Zeega, you will become a member of metaLAB (at) Harvard. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
We’ll be conducting interviews in early September, with an anticipated start date for the position October 1st.
