Johan Malmstedt
Researcher
Johan Malmstedt is a sound enthusiast exploring the conjunction between signal processing and historiography. He is a postdoctoral researcher working on the project Audiovisual Aesthetics in Formation, which investigates the history of crossmodal alignment through the use of machine learning. His research combines computational analysis with media history to understand how audiovisual forms evolve and interact across time.
Malmstedt has a background in the history of ideas and computational methods and is interested in audiovisual media as an object of knowledge. His doctoral dissertation mapped and analyzed the stylistic development of radio broadcasting in Sweden during the latter half of the 20th century, approaching broadcasting history from a sonic perspective.
Additionally, Johan has been involved in several interdisciplinary research projects, including Soundscapes of Warning (soundscape.uni.lu), a collaboration between the University of Luxembourg and Linköping University, WeStAc (estac.se), and the TAIGA-financed History of Vector Models, developed in collaboration with the Department of Musicology and Media Science at Humboldt University, Berlin.
