Be.longings

Happy Housing Tactics

Welcome to Art and Science: Happy Housing Tactics, where we propose “Be.longings” as a speculative horizon—a way to reimagine the spaces we call home. Housing is embedded in the texture of everyday life, a foundation of world-making. And yet, it is increasingly marked by instability, displacement, and struggle—sites shaped by the precarities of neoliberal capitalism.

This project assembles practical and imaginative approaches in speculative spatial design, data visualisation, graphic experimentation, and—at its heart—experimental publishing. It gathers a diverse range of voices, including students, researchers, designers, and practitioners in interior architecture, each contributing from their own unique lived experiences and needs.

The result is a collection of playful, poetic, and practice-based counter-strategies—tools for shaping micro-habitats, retooling economies of space, and imagining zones of be.longing within the constraints of small-unit housing. We pay particular attention to relocating feelings: not just as internal states, but as shared and situated forces that shape collective life.

Be.longings critiques the quiet dystopias of domestic life and opens affective, affirming perspectives—where the strange and the familiar blur, and new modes of intimacy and resistance take root. Happy Housing Tactics supports processes of relational care and practices of fluid, shifting ‘belonging’ in both material and immaterial environments. It embraces speculation and experimentation, with humour and a light touch.

The project creates space for dreaming—moving from real places to imagined dwellings, calling for the dismantling of normative domesticities. Developed in collaboration with HKW (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin), Be.longings offers resources to restore vision and vitality to how we organise our homes and inhabit the ongoing housing crisis.
